Alex

picture of AlexMy son, Alex's learning difficulties have always been very complicated. He has significant visual processing problems, apraxia, aphasia and dyslexia. Although he is very sociable, his interests and skills are similar to that of a younger child. In spite of his difficulties, Alex is always incredibly happy. We are often amazed by his clever comments, fantastic imagination, and excellent memory. He is a beautiful boy, with a terrific smile and a truly original sense of humor.

Alex's personal issues are unique, but like all children with significant learning differences, learning requires great effort - but he can learn. Motivation is the driving force underlying the incredible efforts he must make. Alex is motivated by interacting with others and learning about things that are meaningful to him. He learns through experience, role-playing, stories, and by doing things with his hands. The environment should be adapted for sensory sensitivities, but he must also learn to regulate himself in all types of settings. He needs a lot of positive reinforcement, skilled teachers, and peers who demonstrate appropriate behavior. He also needs to believe that he is capable of helping others. Having relationships with many types of people is very important, but knowing that he is not alone is critical for his self-esteem. He needs to know that he has real friends who are just like him. For Alex and many others, Learning Circle Academy is a place where the environment and programming have been carefully designed to meet these needs.

I created Learning Circle Academy with my partner, Carolyn because we recognized the need for a school that offers hope and real solutions to parents whose deepest fear is, how will my child be able to care for himself when I am unable to watch over him? Our goal is to address this concern by providing a comprehensive program that will give these children the opportunity to reach their maximum potential. For Alex, this means un-doing many years of "learned helplessness" that is a result of being a fully included special needs student. At LCA, he is finally beginning to understand that he is not the only one who needs help. He sees others who are struggling just like him. He is beginning to realize that he must do things by himself, and that his effort is valued more than the end product. In addition to independence, Alex's academic skills are continuing to improve. Without intensive academic intervention he would not have learned to read or write. With the extraordinary skill and determination of a very skilled teacher, now he can! These basic skills enable him to keep learning so much more.

To parents who may be considering LCA for their child, please know that we care about the success of each and every child as much as our own. I think you can see this in their beautiful, smiling faces, and in the letters their parents have so generously provided. I am genuinely inspired by their successes! To those who are considering giving Learning Circle Academy financial support, I have no words that can adequately express our gratitude. We are deeply grateful for your time and support. We need you. Yours is a precious gift that helps to complete the circle of support these children need to become all they can be. Thank-you.
