Devin has always had a difficult time finding success in school. The decision to have him evaluated came after his kindergarten teacher suggested that he be tested due to his poor behavior in school. Although Devin would pick up the academic portion of school quickly and be able to do his schoolwork, staying on task, focusing during class, and controlling his emotions was a problem during elementary school. Devin did not have any true friends. The schools were not able to offer consistent or adequate services to meet his needs. Some teachers were more helpful than others and we were able to work together for Devin. Other times I felt like I was constantly struggling and fighting for what I thought Devin deserved. I was told that I should accept the progress (or lack of) he was making because that was probably all he was capable of doing. I did not accept that.
When Devin entered sixth grade, his first year of middle school, I vowed that this year had to improve or I would have to find a new, better place for him. This was the year when it became apparent that Devin had a problem understanding social cues. It was a nightmare of a year for Devin and us. The demands of having to be organized, independent, move from class to class, deal with older kids, understand new social interactions was too much for Devin. He was always at the counselors’ office for his inappropriate behavior that he did not understand. The teachers chose to send home most his work because he would not participate in class. Homework was completed but Devin would never turn it in. Devin was close to failing sixth grade.
Before sixth grade was over I began searching for a new school for Devin. I came across Learning Circle Academy. After reading about the school and reading the parents’ testimonials, I knew this was for Devin.
Devin started seventh grade at LCA. The staff is like family and they make everyone feel welcome. When I go into the school, I hear about Devin’s sense of humor. Devin comes home from school and tells me about a problem he has been able to work out with another classmate. The teachers really know the students and what they need to succeed. Devin’s self esteem and confidence has improved tremendously since starting at LCA. He is enjoying school now!
Learning Circle Academy is a very special place for Devin and my family.
